Reflection: What have I learned in my first year of blogging? To be patient, to socialize with other bloggers as much as I can, and about 20 different tricks to posting anything from pictures to links. Last year I was a newbie, and I feel much more knowledgeable now! I'm no pro by any means, but I'm slowly getting better. I have to shout out my friend Alison at Teaching Maths With Meaning. Without her, I wouldn't have been inspired to start a blog. She has given me great advice, answered a billion questions, and supported me throughout this journey. I am so lucky to have her in my life!
So most of you don't know me personally, but I'm a bit of an overachiever in pretty much every aspect of my life. Well, dear followers, my Blogversary Celebration is no exception. Since I'm celebrating followers and the first year of my blogging journey, I had to do something pretty special for you. So I've spent the last week putting together an amazing giveaway. I am going to call it "A Few of My Favorite Things" because I wanted it to include items that I LOVE. I can say without a doubt that each of these SIX giveaways represents items or teachers whose resources I LOVE. I hope that you will enjoy this Blogversary Celebration! Thank you to everyone who has followed and supported me throughout the last year (and if you have just recently found me, thank you for joining me). I'm enjoying this journey in blogging and look forward to more incredible experiences in the future!
Ok, now get those fingers ready to click! You've got some seriously amazing giveaways to enter! All giveaways will last for one week, August 17-August 24. Due to the size of this giveaway, please be patient with me and give me a day or two to get the winners chosen and contacted after the giveaway ends. Thank you!
Giveaway #1: Name Plaque from Kasefazem Decor.
I found this store via Etsy and I've already purchased two items and know that I will purchase more as gifts for colleagues. Her plaques are so cute and she even makes Do Not Disturb signs, which I just ordered! Based out of Portugal, Vanda's service is top notch. I place an order and I hear from her right away. That's outstanding service! She is not only on top of things, but creates adorable plaques too. Also, her prices are totally reasonable! I really wanted one of my followers to have the chance to win one of these adorable plaques and Vanda has been gracious enough to donate one 4x8 custom plaque to one lucky winner. There are four styles to choose from as shown below (mine is at the top!) Good luck to the winner as it won't be easy to choose just one of these adorable plaques! By the way, she'll ship to a winner worldwide, so my favorite Aussie bloggers, be sure you get in on this giveaway too!

Giveaway #5: A Classroom Set of 12 Quick Response Whiteboards from Trainers Warehouse
When I first began teaching, I wanted white boards for each student and my school did not have that supply. I searched for whiteboards that would be easy and fun for my students to use and ended up on the website of a training store where I found these amazing whiteboards! Let me tell you that my students LOVE these whiteboards and are constantly asking if they can use them. There is something about the paddle handle that they LOVE. When I first bought these, they were only one sided and they lasted through the use and abuse of my students for 8 years. Last year, I replaced the set because I saw that they had improved their product to include the whiteboard on both sides. The new ones are lighter too and even more durable than the last. I have a feeling that I will have them around for quite some time. So, clearly I love them, and I thought you might too! So here's your chance to get a classroom set of 12! Also, take a peak around the Trainers Warehouse Website when you can. They've got a lot of fantastic products for the classroom!

Ok - so I have entered all those that I am allowed too! Thanks so much for the shout out, the love and the friendship over the last 12 months - I wish we were still working together in Washington!!!!!!! I did accidentally enter the pencil sharpener one so you will have to remove that entry! Oops!
ReplyDeleteNow, favourite teacher - I loved Mrs Simcock - she was my Grade 2 and Grade 3 teacher - so lovely, so organised, knew how to teach each student rather than the whole class - I remember how much my parents loved that she asked "Could I teach Alison again, I feel she is really getting somewhere" - isn't that just the nicest thing ever!
Enjoy your weekend Mrs O - I will promote properly on Tuesday - I have scheduled blog posts piling up at the moment! xxx
Alison
She sounds like a fantastic teacher! I always thought that if I looped with a teacher it would've been my luck to have looped with one of the mean ones, but I never got the chance when I was in school. Now I figure that teachers look at it the same way...they would love to loop with a class from heaven, but the more challenging classes...probably not! I've yet to loop as a teacher as it seems I make everyone happy teaching 5th and hey, the good news is that teaching 5th makes ME happy!
DeleteXO
Rachel, your blog and these giveaways are amazing. I can tell you have been busy!!! You are an amazing teacher and your passion really shines through!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite teacher was my fourth and fifth grad teacher, Mr. Deagle. In the fall of my fourth grade year my mom attended my fall conference. At our school the students didn't go with their parents to the conference, it was only the parent meeting with the teacher. I anxiously awaited her return and asked her what he had to say about me. She told me that I am getting good grades in all subjects, but that Mr. Deagle made an interesting comment: "Rachel does school very well." He told my mom that he sees me go through the motions with school, and up until being his class I learned how to skate by. His goal for me in his class was to break out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. He was a very unconventional teacher and being in his class helped me find a joy for learning. He helped me approach learning tasks in a different way, and show my learning through performance assessments. I have nothing but fond memories from being in his class for two years!
Hi Rachel! So glad to see that you've come by! Mr. Deagle sounds amazing. It is the teachers who showed an interest in my learning that had the biggest impact on my learning. The fact that he saw through you to bring out an even better you....well, I just love that! I hope I can be that amazing for my students too! Thanks so much for sharing! Hope you are all doing well at Christensen. I miss you guys!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Knight. It's funny because I had wanted the other 2nd grade teacher at the time. I was a crier in kdg and scared of my teacher in 1st so 2nd grade was extra scary for me. The other 2nd grade teacher had been my preschool teacher, and I was comfortable with her. Instead, I got the new teacher. However, that was the best thing that could have happened to me. Because of my amazing teacher, I learned to love school and learning. That was the first year I won 2nd place in a pages read contest in our school. I became an expert in math facts in her class. School was my favorite place because of her. I truly believe that if I didn't have Mrs. Knight as my teacher, I would have never become a teacher.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing! If I can inspire my students to love school and learning, then I know I've been successful regardless of what any numbers say. I always tell my students that it is my goal for them to leave with a love of learning and so far, I've accomplished that more often than not! I hope I have inspired some of my students to be future teachers and that when they share a story like yours, I will be the person they name. Fingers crossed!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my kindergarten teacher. She taught me to love learning.
ReplyDeleteThat seems to be a common theme. It really helps to put things in to perspective as a new year begins. We should all be focused on teaching our students to love learning so they will name us as their favorite teachers one day! Thank you for sharing Holly!
DeleteI'm Mrs. O too!
ReplyDeleteWell, hello to Mrs. O from Mrs. O! :-)
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my high school journalism teacher. She taught me so much about the writing process. I have always enjoyed writing. In her room, I had an article published in our high school magazines. I chose to do an article on a local haunted house. It was great!
ReplyDeletesusanlulu@yahoo.com
Susan, that is fantastic! I have always enjoyed writing as well and I think that an article on a local haunted house would be a lot of fun to write! My students have to do a research paper this year and now you've got me thinking about diving in to some local history. Hmmm...
DeleteThanks for sharing!
My favorite teacher is Mrs. Lang. She made me love reading and inspired me to follow in her footsteps!
ReplyDeleteAnd that's what it's all about! As I read everyone's comments, it inspires me to instill that love of learning in any way that I can!
DeleteMy best teacher ever was Mrs. Emmert. She made 3rd grade magical and is the reason I teach 3rd grade myself!
ReplyDeleteShe must have been a great inspiration! It's funny how we seem to teach the grades where we were inspired the most. I taught fourth grade for my first few years because I LOVED my fourth grade teacher and when I moved to fifth, I continued to channel my inner Ms. Taylor!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my third grade teacher, Mrs. Jones. I was an ESOL student and had trouble learning English. She taught me how to write and read English. She also helped me improve my handwriting.
ReplyDeleteeileen30582@yahoo.com
It sounds like Mrs. Jones was a pretty outstanding lady! I hope she knows what a difference she made for you!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my junior high science teacher. He always pushed the students academically and had high expectations for behavior. I want to be just like Mr. Langstaff in my classroom!
ReplyDeleteI think high expectations for behavior make a world of difference in the classroom for both teachers and students. It sounds like Mr. Langstaff was the kind of teacher that we all can model our classroom after!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Moore. She created such a caring community in the classroom. I'm so excited that I'm starting my career as a teacher in 2nd grade! :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck on your first year! It sounds like you will be channeling a lot of your inner Mrs. Moore! I am sure you will be a fantastic teacher!
DeleteThis is my first peek at your blog and it is lovely!! So glad to have found your space in the blogosphere. :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome Dana! I'm glad that you found me too! :-)
Deleteoops! I forgot to answer the question as I was carried away with the cute blog.... Mr. Wilson, 7th grade core classes. Learning was fun. I'm still not quite sure how he did it, but I did get to go back and visit after I began teaching. It was wonderful to get to thank him in person.
ReplyDeleteI wish that I lived close enough to go back and visit my teachers that made a difference. I had a favorite elementary school teacher and a favorite high school teacher. Additionally, I had two college professors who were truly amazing! I'd love to go back and tell them what a difference they made in my life.
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Miss Gordon. I had her for 1st and 4th grade and she was fantastic :) I loved that she made learning fun and exciting for me!
ReplyDeleteMrsKAPetkac@gmail.com
What a special treat to get to have her twice!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Mrs. Allen, my second grade teacher. She led sing alongs to help us learn.
ReplyDeletekmhteacher@yahoo.com
Since I'm a fan of musicals, I would've loved a singing teacher! I can't carry a tune to save my life, so I rely on Mr. Lee's raps when I teach science. The kids get a kick out of it and learn too!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Mrs. Sylvester my 3rd grade teacher. She was kind and very understanding when I was struggling!
ReplyDeletekattstu@gmail.com
Mrs. Sylvester sounds kind and patient and that is the kind of teacher that kids will always remember! It's those experiences that help us to mold our own craft!
DeleteIt's really hard to choose as I have to honestly say I had amazing teachers almost every year. However, the two teachers that inspired me to become a teacher myself were Mrs. Barneyback and Mr. Penrod my 9th and 10th grade teachers. They made literature come alive. I remember reading books such as Lord of the Flies or Animal Farm with them and falling in love with the characters.
ReplyDeleteI had a teacher like that in 9th grade. Her name was Mrs. Larrivey. She would stand on her desk and read Romeo and Juliet with such passion that I couldn't help but love Shakespeare! I haven't stood on my desk yet...maybe this year! Thanks for sharing, Sarah!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Mr.Pawlak, my 6th grade teacher. He found the strength in every student.
ReplyDeletejkmatuch@aol.com
We can all learn from Pawlak! As a general education teacher with a special education inclusion class, it's my focus to celebrate everyone's strengths so that all students leave each day feeling that they have achieved success!
DeleteMy favorite teacher every was my 1/2 teacher, Mrs. Donovan-Smith. She was helpful, engaging, and fun! She also supported me when I was struggling, which was a lot
ReplyDeleteRae
Mindful Rambles
mindfulrambles@gmail.com
That seems to be a common theme. As teachers, we can learn from the stories that are being shared. Helping a struggling student is our job, and it is something that students will never forget!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Mrs. Branch, my 2nd grade (and then 4th grade) teacher. She is the reason I wanted to teach! Everything we did was so integrated and meaningful. She focused so much on building our community and encouraging "random acts of kindness". :)
ReplyDeleteBreanne
breannesimons@gmail.com
Mrs. Branch was your inspiration! I love it! I wish we could direct all of these wonderful teachers to this page and let them know ow much they influenced our decision to be educators! Thank you for sharing, Breanne!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Mrs. Marconi. She was my 4th grade teacher and inspired me to become the 4th grade teacher that I am today :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing! My 4th grade teacher was my favorite too! She was a big fan of Bruce Springsteen and incorporated her love for him in all of our class activities. I remember playing telephone and she would give us the name of a Springsteen album to pass on. LOL! I loved her! 4th grade is an amazing grade!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my 5th and 6th grade teacher Mr. Larson. I can remember him making learning a lot of fun. I also remember that he talked about the different types of intelligence and how we all learn differently. I wanted to be a teacher even back then, so I thought it was cool that a teacher would notice that people learn differently and take that into consideration when teaching us.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like Mr Larson wanted to reach all students and was willing to adjust his teaching to appeal to all learners in his class! That's what fantastic teachers are made of!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Kimura. She was caring and honest. She was the teacher I looked up to and who made me want to be a teacher too.
ReplyDeleteMy fourth grade teacher was my favorite too! I'll never forget her!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Mrs. Brown for 1st grade. She was always so nice and smiled a lot. Years later, when I got my first teaching job, it was at the same primary school I attended. Not only was Mrs. Brown still there, but my new classroom was right across the hall from her! We became great friends... I miss her.
ReplyDeleteHow awesome is that? I would've LOVED to teach with my favorite teacher. I think it's really neat that you became friends later on. Thanks for sharing!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my third grade teacher (and I teach third grade now). I can't remember her name (I'm old!), but I remember that I was relaxed in her class. I was a worrier, a high anxiety child, and the fact that I was at peace and happy there means a lot. I'm not sure how she gave me (us) the sense of safety, but I hope I can do that with my students.
ReplyDeletekganon@sanjuan.edu
I love that she gave you a positive, relaxed environment where you were comfortable in your learning!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Mrs. Abe because she gave me an F. My only F ever however she did not bend and made me a better writer. It probably saved me in college!
ReplyDeleteI got a C in English in 8th grade. It was just my progress report grade, but the first time I had anything lower than an A in English. I cried and panicked and when I was done freaking out I reread my book. I worked incredibly hard to improve my grade to a B by the end of the marking period. I had an A overall by the end of the year, but the teacher held me to higher expectations than ever before. It made me take things a lot more seriously for sure!
DeleteMy favorite teachers were Mrs. Anne and Mrs. JoAnn. They were co-teachers when I was in 2nd grade. They were very laid back and encouraging but also set high expectations.
ReplyDeleteWe had co-teachers when I was in kindergarten and I loved them both! Thank you for sharing, Pamela!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my grade 4 teacher, Mr.Perkins. He made sure that I always felt welcomed in his class because back then, I was a shy little girl. Congrats on the 200+ followers. I'm very happy for you. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteNajda
Thank you for sharing, Najda! It seems that 4th grade was memorable for many of us! Thanks so much for your support in this blogging adventure!
DeleteMy favourite teacher was Miss Leonard, she used to play the guitar and sing songs with us, this was back in the 70's so you know it was folk songs. Looking back now I thinks she was a bit of a hippy :) but it was always calm and quiet in our room and she had a song for everything.
ReplyDeleteTania
Mrs Poultney's Ponderings
Hi Tania! So glad to see that you stopped by! I LOVE your blog! Miss Leonard sounds like she was one cool lady! For me, there's nothing better than a teacher who has a song for everything. If I could carry a tune I'd sing to my students all day long, but I'm afraid that I might cause more ear plugging than enjoyment! ;-)
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my High School chemistry teacher Mr. Ward. That is when I totally fell in love with science. I could wait to take every science course there was offered after that!
ReplyDeleteMichelle
mjaquillard@oregoncs.org
I didn't enjoy science until a few years ago. The idea of teaching it and making it seem like I was passionate about it was pretty scary to me, but I am slowly getting there! Thanks for sharing!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Mrs. Boutwell in 11th grade. She taught English and was an old woman who dressed in a wonderfully neat fashion way. She helped to create a love for literature. Congratulations on your number of followers. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLaNessa
First of all, I love your name! My favorite musical is Wicked and one of the characters is named Nessa. Couldn't help but think of it when I saw your post! I had a social studies teacher who was quite the fashionista. She wore heels that were at least three inches each day and I swear she was only about 4 foot 10! I do not know how she did it, but she looked fabulous each day and she was totally spunky. Loved her!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Statz. She was a "grandma" teacher and very loving and hands on. She made me feel important and loved, all the while teaching me to read.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Statz sounds lovely! Thank you for sharing!
DeleteOne of my favorite teachers ever was Mr. Payne. I had him for geometry & trig. He made math fun! dbednarsk@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI didn't embrace math when I first started teaching, but I've begun to think that math actually is fun! If I had Mr. Payne as a teacher, it might not have taken me so long to realize it!
DeleteMs. Hess was my high school gym teacher. She was more like a friend / counselor to me during high school. She helped me through a lot. I still keep in contact with her today and go back and visit at least once a school year.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog, too :)
Stephanie @ Mrs. D's Corner
You're the first one to claim a specialist teacher as their favorite! I think it's great that she was so supportive to you! I feel like I never got to know any of my specialist teachers, and you're making me wish that I had.
DeleteThanks for stopping by Stephanie!
I absolutely enjoyed my fourth grade year because of my teacher Mrs. Taylor! She made learning fun and hands on, which was something that was "new" back in the 80's in a private school. We had fun with crafts and writing our own books. We did projects that were meaningful and did not just sit in our desks all day!. That is my model of teaching now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a fun giveaway and letting everyone know about mine!
Andrea
Reading Toward the Stars
Thanks right back at you for the same! It's so nice to make new connections with teachers through the blogging world.
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my fourth grade teacher and her name was Ms. Taylor too! I actually had a 7th grade teacher named Ms. Taylor who was pretty awesome as well. It must be something with the name. :-)
My favorite teacher was Mrs. Rabino. She taught first grade and was just the kindest person ever. It felt like she really got to know us as individuals. She became like a second mother to us. Through her kindness she gained respect. I just always looked up to her and wanting to be like her.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Rabino sounds like she knew a thing or two about behavior management. I have always firmly believed that if we are respectful to our students, we will get that same respect back and so far, it's worked! Kindness and respect go a long way!
DeleteThanks for the opportunity! Great giveaways!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite teacher was my Grade 2 teacher Mrs. Cowdy. She was soo sweet and read the best books to us. I just remember having so much fun in her class.
You're so welcome! My grandmother instilled my love for reading and I always attached myself to those teachers that had a passion for it as well. Thanks for sharing!
DeleteMy favorite teacher ever is my third grade teacher Mrs. Justice. She treated all of us the same and did not care about last names (super small town) unlike other teachers. I had so much fun in her class! It was because of her that I aspired to be a teacher. Now, I'm a third grade teacher and still keep in touch with her!
ReplyDeleteI love how so many of these shares have a connection between the grade that you teach and the grade that your favorite teacher taught. I'm sure that you are a fantastic teacher thanks to your experience with Mrs. Justice!
DeleteFavorite teacher was Mrs. Stickle for high school chemistry and then physics. What a great role model, working through her master's degree, starting her family, our class year advisor and being supportive of those of us "dreaming" of becoming engineers. Many of us followed her into teaching after our first careers.
ReplyDeleteI never had a science teacher that I loved and as a result I struggled with science. I bet if I had experienced a classroom with a teacher like Mrs. Stickle I would've been far more interested in science. Thank you for sharing, Kate!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was my K teacher. She was warm and welcoming and made learning so much fun!
ReplyDeleteKaty
Firstgradekate@gmail.com
Firstgradekate.blogspot.com
She sounds like the perfect teacher! I think there is a special place in heaven for K teachers. I think they are probably more exhausted than teachers at other grade levels at the end of each day! Thank you for stopping by, Katy!
DeleteGreat giveaways! My favorite teacher was Mr. R. Spivey, my art teacher in high school. I had been to 5 high schools and had 5 art teachers, and his class surpassed the rest.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gillian! I'm glad that you love the giveaways!
DeleteIt sounds like you got to move around quite a bit. That can be so hard, so I bet that finding a teacher who inspired you was a fantastic feeling!
Yes, it was. Ironically enough, however, my worst art teacher was also taught by the same best art teacher. Five high schools definitely meant life was in the air a lot. But I made great friends and got to meet people with very different lives. Most people I've known cannot say the same. My credits definitely suffered for it though, since back then, schools did not commonly use fax machines and my records would take 6-8 weeks to transfer. Yikes! Good to be in the digital age now ;D
DeleteMy favorite teacher ever was Mr. C. He was my 5th grade teacher. He knew how to encourage and boost every child's self-esteem. He made you believe that he believed in you, no matter what. I don't remember his teaching, just that feeling of being capable of anything. To me, that was the most important lesson of all.
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog and I love it! Thanks for the amazing giveaway :) I am now a loyal follower!
lauraschachter@gmail.com
I had a Mr. C for 5th grade too! He was a real character and I enjoyed his teaching as well. I love that your Mr. C believed in everyone and made you feel like you could take on the world! Mr. C sounds awesome! Thanks for following!
DeleteMy favorite was Mr. Lowe. He taught in such a way that we all understood the concepts. He was also kind and gentle.
ReplyDeletefoxysexyroxy10@gmail.com
He sounds like a fantastic, engaging teacher. Thanks so much for sharing!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Mrs. Hellender in 4th grade. We did a 3rd and 4th grade circus that the whole school would come watch. The teachers dressed up as a clown duo and the students would run a side show act. She also had a ticket system for incentives and once a month a couple parents volunteered to help run it and they set up our school library like a little store to buy toys or books with our tickets. Beth Rodda
ReplyDeleteA circus sounds like so much fun! That gives me so many new ideas to think about. Thanks to Mrs. Hellender and to you for sharing!
DeleteOne of my favorite teachers was Mr. Bricker! He made learning fun and we still communicate today (MANY years ago since I was his student)! He took the time to create personal relationships and has been like a father to many students over the years.
ReplyDeleteThat's really great! I have a few students who I still communicate with from when I lived in Massachusetts and Washington. Some are about to be seniors in high school! Crazy!
DeleteMrs. Baird. She taught reading and writing to eighth graders. Bet writing teacher ever! Best!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! thank you for sharing!
DeleteMy favorite teacher was Mrs. Kaufman, grade 6. She had just gotten married (later in life) and everyone and their parents knew her as Miss Cook, so she would let you call her that, too. At Christmas we painted the HUGE glass windows of our school with different holiday pictures. Fun, fun, fun!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! One of my former colleagues had a brother who would come in and paint all of our windows at Christmas time. It looked AMAZING!
DeleteI had lots of favorite teachers, but one of my favorites was my 6th grade teacher because she took such a personal interest in me.
ReplyDeleteI love that! I once had a professor ask me if everything was ok after I missed a couple of her classes because I was sick. It was so meaningful to me that she had noticed and taken the time to ask.
DeleteThanks again for holding this giveaway. I've shared it on my blog, Chasing Grades.
ReplyDelete
